Indian Railways’ Ferozepur Division has started delivering Kashmir’s famous luscious Cherries to major markets of the country, including Maharashtra and Gujarat, via high-speed rail from Amritsar. The service has not only relieved the cherry growers of Kashmir but also facilitated the fruit lovers to have a taste of the juicy cherries from the valley of Kashmir.
To maintain its quality and freshness, the Ferozepur Division has ensured logistical arrangements for this perishable fruit. The fruit, which starts from Amritsar, reaches Vadodara and Surat in Gujarat in about 29 hours and to Bandra in Mumbai in 31 hours in special parcel vans of the railways.
Ferozepur based Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (Freight Services), Paramdeep Singh Saini, told Akashvani that at the end of May, approximately 13 tonnes of premium-quality cherries were shipped to the major markets of both states. He said the consignments from Kashmir come between end of May to mid-July for further delivery. The transportation is proving helpful to the cherry growers of Jammu and Kashmir in getting better prices for their produce.
