Union Home Minister and Chairman of the North Eastern Council (NEC) Amit Shah will chair the NEC’s 73rd Plenary Session in Shillong, Meghalaya tomorrow. The Ministry of Development of North-East Region said that the session will discuss and deliberate on progress made by the CM High-Level Task Forces constituted for critical sectors of regional development.
During the session, presentations will be made on Tourism, Agriculture and Horticulture, Investment Promotion, Self-Reliance in Milk, Eggs, Fish and Meat, Sports Promotion, Economic Corridor Development, Infrastructure and Connectivity, and Handloom and Handicrafts. The deliberations are expected to facilitate coordinated action among States and stakeholders for achieving shared developmental goals.
It will further deliberate on the North East Vision Plan 2047, which seeks to provide a long-term roadmap for transforming the North Eastern Region into a vibrant hub of economic growth, connectivity, innovation, sustainability, and cultural prosperity by 2047. The North Eastern Council, established under the North Eastern Council Act, 1971, serves as the apex regional planning body for the North Eastern Region. It plays a pivotal role in fostering coordinated development and strengthening cooperative federalism in the region.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma will present a key tourism roadmap. It will seek to position the Northeast as a unified destination and a major tourism market, reflecting a growing push for regional cooperation and collective branding of the strategically important region. Sangma, who chairs the High-Level Task Force on Tourism for the NorthEast Region, said the report will focus on how the eight States can jointly market the region to domestic and international visitors rather than promoting individual destinations in isolation.
The task force has been entrusted with identifying strategic gaps in the tourism sector and recommending a comprehensive development roadmap to unlock the North-East’s tourism potential. Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and Vice Chairman, NEC, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Minister of State for DoNER, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar will be present for the annual policy forum aimed at shaping the region’s development agenda. Governors and Chief Ministers of all eight Northeastern States, other Members of NEC and Senior Officers of central and state governments will also be present.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang will present the report on Agriculture & Horticulture, Investment, Promotion, Infrastructure and connectivity, which will be presented by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu will present a report on Self-reliance on milk, eggs, fish and meat. Sports Promotion report will be presented by Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Economic Corridor Development by Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, and Handloom and Handicrafts will be presented by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.
