The death toll from a fire at an elderly care home in Batagoda, Aguruwathota, Sri Lanka, has risen to more than eight, police said. Authorities recovered the bodies of at least eight victims from the facility following the blaze. Eight other residents who sustained injuries were admitted to hospital for treatment. Emergency responders rescued 51 residents from the home as firefighting and rescue operations continued at the scene. Police said investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire, while further details regarding the victims and the circumstances surrounding the incident have yet to be released.
