United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for restraint amid escalating hostilities in Yemen. He condemned Houthi attacks on civilian targets in Saudi Arabia, warning that the violence is increasing civilian suffering and regional tensions.
In a post on social media, Mr Guterres called for a political solution to the conflict, saying the continued hostilities were inflicting immense suffering on civilians.
Meanwhile, Yemen’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed a European Parliament resolution urging the European Union to designate the Houthi movement as a terrorist organisation. The ministry described the move as an important step towards protecting civilians, strengthening regional security and ensuring the safety of international navigation.
In its resolution, adopted yesterday, the European Parliament condemned Houthi attacks as violations of international law and international humanitarian law. It also expressed concern over civilian casualties, displacement and the worsening humanitarian crisis in Yemen, while condemning Houthi missile and drone attacks against Israel and the United Arab Emirates in recent years.
