In Tibet, 16 people have been killed and over 40 injured after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Baqen County in Nagqu City last evening. Hundreds of homes collapsed and rockfalls were triggered. Rescue operations are underway, with more than 1,600 personnel deployed to assist those affected and provide emergency relief.
The Nagqu media office said at least 339 homes and 20 livestock sheds collapsed in the earthquake. Of the 46 injured, 11 were in serious condition. Communication services were disrupted in parts of the region, while railway authorities halted train services as a precaution.
Meanwhile, intermittent snowfall is forecast in the affected region over the next three days, raising concerns for residents displaced by the earthquake and those involved in rescue operations.
India’s National Centre for Seismology said the earthquake struck Nagqu City at 8:03 pm Indian Standard Time, at a depth of 173 kilometres, around 400 kilometres from Lhasa.
