Tripura’s traditional Sarinda receives GI tag

Tripura’s rich cultural heritage has received a major boost with the traditional Tripura Sarinda being granted the Geographical Indication, or GI, tag. The stringed musical instrument, closely associated with the indigenous communities of the state, is known for its unique craftsmanship and cultural significance.

The GI recognition is expected to help preserve and promote Tripura’s folk traditions while providing wider national and international recognition to the instrument. It is also likely to improve livelihood opportunities for artisans engaged in making and preserving the Sarinda by protecting its authenticity and enhancing its market value. With this recognition, Tripura now has four GI-tagged products. The others are Tripura Queen Pineapple, Risa and Pachra, also known as Rignai, and Matabari Peda. The addition of Tripura Sarinda further reinforces the state’s rich indigenous and cultural identity.
