Trawling ban will be lifted across the coast of Keralam tonight. The ban on mechanised fishing along the Kerala coast will be lifted at midnight on Friday-Saturday. The 52-day annual trawling ban was imposed to facilitate fish breeding in the sea.

 

Thousands of workers in the fishing sector are busy preparing for the new fishing season. Fishing workers who had returned to their hometowns have already started arriving at fishing harbours near Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kochi, Kozhikode and other areas.

 

Fishing boats are being refuelled, while food, water and other essential supplies are being procured for venturing into the sea.

 

The fishing industry is expecting a good season, as traditional fishing boats recorded good catches during the ban period, which began on June 9.

 

Meanwhile, the possibility of adverse weather conditions and restrictions on fishing activities has raised concern among the fishing community. Eleven of the 14 districts in Keralam are under orange alert today.
