Today marks 25 years since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. On September 11, 2001, four passenger planes were hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists. Two were flown into New York’s World Trade Center, one struck the Pentagon near Washington, D.C., and a fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back against the hijackers. Across the US today, memorial ceremonies are being held to remember those who died, including firefighters, police officers, emergency workers and civilians. In New York, the names of the victims are being read aloud at the site of the former World Trade Center. Memorial services are also being held at the Pentagon and at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania.
