Threat of widespread flood looms large over different parts of Odisha under impact of depression over Bay of Bengal

In Odisha, the threat of a medium-scale flood in the Mahanadi system is expected as 9 to 9.5 lakh cusecs of flood water is likely to flow at Mundali in Cuttack district by this evening. The flood water will reach Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Puri districts tomorrow.

The low-lying areas of these 3 districts are under the focus of the state government. Two days of incessant rains in the upper catchment areas due to the depression over Bay of Bengal has left different rivers of Odisha in spate while many villages in Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal, Boudh, Deogarh and Keonjhar districts have been cut off by swirling flood water. Meanwhile, the Special Relief Commissioner of Odisha has asked the Collectors of Angul, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara districts to take precautionary measures and keep watch on weak embankments.

As many as 8 NDRF, 13 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force and 23 fire services teams have been deployed in Bhadrak, Jajpur, Sambalpur, Kenojhar, Mayurbhanj, Angrul, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Balasore, Cuttack, Puri, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara for search and rescue operations. The state government has also directed Collectors of these districts to take adequate measures and keep all field-level functionaries at strategic locations to meet any ventality. It has ordered provisioning of dry and cooked food and drinking water for people marooned by flood water.
