Campaigning gears up for assembly elections in Tamil Nadu

Campaigning for Tamil Nadu’s Assembly Elections intensified today as national and regional leaders held rallies across the state, sharpening attacks with five days left before voting.

Senior BJP leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a National Democratic Alliance rally at Codissia in Coimbatore alongside AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami. He criticised opposition parties for not supporting the Women’s Reservation Bill, alleging that they failed to prioritise the welfare of women.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi campaigned in Ranipet and Thuraiyur, where he accused PM Modi of being influenced by foreign interests and alleged that the BJP aimed to control Tamil Nadu through the AIADMK. He also praised Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for resisting pressure from the Centre.

Actor-turned-politician Vijay, who leads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, claimed a “silent revolution” was underway, accusing the DMK government of obstructing his party’s campaign.

The Election Commission said postal voting for senior citizens and persons with disabilities concluded in several districts, with about 1.41 lakh voters casting ballots so far.

Campaigning for single-phase assembly elections in Tamil Nadu will end on 21st of April. Voting for all 234 constituencies will take place on 23rd of April, with the counting scheduled for May 4. Security has been tightened in sensitive areas, including Coimbatore and parts of southern Tamil Nadu.
