Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary has emphasized that India must build a skilling ecosystem based on trust, quality and lifelong learning to make the country the global skill capital. Addressing the World Youth Skills Day 2026 celebrations and the 11th anniversary of the Skill India Mission in New Delhi today, the Minister said that this year’s theme “Skilling for a Shared Future” reflects the country’s commitment to preparing its workforce not only for domestic opportunities but also for global labour markets. The Minister said skilling should no longer be viewed merely as a means to secure employment but as an integral part of lifelong learning, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP). Mr Chaudhary underlined that India is positioning itself as a trusted partner in global value chains and labour mobility. He stressed that every skilling intervention must reflect quality and credibility.
The minister expressed concern over the low participation of women in non-traditional trades such as welding, electrician and automotive mechanics. He said the Ministry’s newly formed Gender Mainstreaming Committee would work towards increasing women’s participation in designing and implementing skill development programmes.
