Sri Lanka is facing widespread disruption from adverse weather conditions, with nearly 80 thousand people affected across the island. The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said over 31 thousand families had been impacted by heavy rains and strong winds linked to the developing south-west monsoon. One weather-related death has been reported, while hundreds of homes suffered damage, including two that were completely destroyed.
The Department of Meteorology warned of rough seas and strong southwesterly winds around much of the island over the next 24 hours. Wave heights of up to 2.5 metres were also forecast in parts of the surrounding seas, prompting warnings to fishing and naval communities.
Emergency response teams have been deployed to affected coastal areas as relief operations continue.
