A team from Meta today met Ministry of Electronics and IT officials following the notice summoning them on the issue of roll-out of the “usernames” feature on WhatsApp in India. Sources said Ministry officials sensitised them about the government’s concern relating to the feature.

 

Sources added that as the timeline for furnishing the detailed explanation on the “usernames” feature is for three days, Meta will submit their final reply as per the schedule.

 

 

Meanwhile, sources also said that Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has directed Ministry officials to summon Meta on the matter of Instagram ads promoting child sexual abuse material in India. The Ministry will seek an explanation from Meta on the issue.
