Maharashtra: Rain eases across Mumbai, Palghar remains on Red Alert

After two days of relentless downpours that brought Mumbai Metropolitan Region to a standstill, rainfall intensity across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and parts of Raigad eased little today. However, Palghar continues to remain the exception in the MMR region.

The district witnessed fresh spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall through the morning, prompting authorities to continue with a Red Alert due to the possibility of extremely heavy rain, strong winds and flooding in low-lying areas. Maharashtra’s ghat sections continue to remain under severe stress due to incessant rainfall and repeated landslides.

Heavy rainfall has also battered the Sahyadri ranges in western Maharashtra. In Nashik district, authorities have issued precautionary advisories for residents living along the banks of the Godavari River after water discharge from upstream reservoirs led to a rise in river levels.

Meanwhile, Tulsi and Vihar lakes, which supply potable water to Mumbai, have started overflowing. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra State Emergency Operations Centre has reported that the heaviest rainfall during the last 24 hours was recorded in Thane district at nearly 197 mm, followed by Palghar with 185 mm and Raigad with 134 mm. Several rivers in the Konkan region, including the Savitri at Mahad and the Kundalika in Raigad district, have crossed danger levels, while high-wave warnings remain in force along the Maharashtra coast.
