In Jammu and Kashmir, the Mission Directorate, Jal Jeevan Mission, has launched a 15-day intensive Water Quality Testing Campaign to identify potential contamination hotspots and ensure safe drinking water in rural areas. Our Correspondent reports that Additional Chief Secretary, Jal Shakti Department, Shaleen Kabra, e-launched the Jal Gunvatta Parikshan Abhiyan yesterday.
During the campaign, district and divisional officers, District Programme Management Units and water testing laboratory staff will undertake sample collection, testing, documentation and daily reporting on the Water Quality Management Information System portal.
The initiative aims to bridge gaps in water quality testing, strengthen digital monitoring and promote community participation. Special emphasis will be placed on training community members, particularly women, in using Field Test Kits and reporting results.
Awareness activities will focus on BIS 10500 drinking water standards, water conservation, prevention of water-borne diseases and improved water, sanitation and hygiene practices. The campaign is expected to facilitate timely identification of contamination and strengthen water quality surveillance.
