J&K celebrates 79th Accession Day today

In Jammu and Kashmir, 79th accession day is being celebrated across the Union Territory today. It was on this day in 1947, Maharaja Hari Singh, the then ruler of the princely state, signed the Instrument of Accession, formally Jammu and Kashmir joining with the Indian Union. The signing occurred on October 26, 1947, and the accession became effective the next day, October 27, 1947. This historic event occurred during the turmoil following the partition of India, when the region was threatened by invasion from Pakistan.

Tribal invaders from Pakistan attacked the state, posing a threat to its sovereignty. The day is celebrated as a symbol of unity and patriotism, marking the formal integration of the state into India. All government offices and educational institutions across Jammu and Kashmir will remain closed today in observance of Accession Day, as per the official holiday calendar issued by the General Administration Department (GAD). However, essential services, including emergency healthcare, electricity, water supply and law enforcement, are expected to continue functioning to ensure that routine public services and emergency requirements remain unaffected.
