The Government has said that the country’s National Highway network has grown by nearly 61 percent, to over one lakh 46 thousand kilometers in March this year from over 91 thousand kilometre in 2014. This rapid development has strengthened connectivity, improved access to markets and supported faster movement of people and goods.

The greening of India’s National Highway network is guided by the Green Highways (Plantation, Transplantation, Beautification and Maintenance) Policy, 2015. The Policy was formulated to evolve a framework for plantations along National Highways and reduce the impact of air pollution and dust, meanwhile creating employment opportunities for local people.
