India has called for terrorist acts that meet the threshold of crimes against humanity to be covered under the proposed international convention on the prevention and punishment of such crimes. Speaking at the UN General Assembly’s Sixth Committee, Counsellor at India’s UN Mission, R. Mythili, said the issue should be addressed in line with the framework of the proposed convention. She stressed that nations must retain primary responsibility for protecting people, ensuring accountability for grave violations and exercising jurisdiction, while respecting the rights of the accused and the interests of victims. Ms. Mythili also underlined that measures to prevent and punish crimes against humanity must respect national sovereignty and the principle of non-interference in internal affairs. The convention is expected to be adopted at an international conference in 2028.
