Income Tax Day is being observed across the country today, marking another milestone in India’s evolving taxation system. The occasion commemorates the establishment and growth of the Income Tax Department while highlighting the country’s journey towards a transparent, technology-driven and taxpayer-friendly tax administration.
Over the decades, India’s tax ecosystem has undergone a remarkable transformation. A major shift came in 1981 with the introduction of computerisation in tax administration. The electronic processing of tax challans laid the foundation for technology-driven reforms.
This was followed by the introduction of the Permanent Account Number (PAN) in 1995, which enabled better tracking and integration of financial transactions. The digital transformation gained further momentum with the launch of online filing of Income Tax Returns. E-filing significantly reduced paperwork, lowered compliance costs and enabled taxpayers to access services anytime.
In recent years, the Income Tax Department has adopted advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and machine learning to further strengthen tax administration. Income Tax Day serves as a reminder that a modern and efficient tax administration promotes voluntary compliance and contributes to the nation’s overall development.
