IAEA Chief Highlights Nuclear Power’s Growing Role in Energy Security

The head of the UN nuclear agency, Rafael Grossi, has said that global nuclear power capacity could more than triple by 2060. In the International Atomic Energy Agency’s annual report to the UN General Assembly,  Mr. Grossi said that this growth would be driven by electrification, AI-powered data centres and technology companies’ demand for reliable, carbon-free energy. He highlighted the growing role of nuclear power in strengthening energy security.

Mr. Grossi also raised concerns about the nuclear programmes of Iran and North Korea, threats to nuclear safety caused by the war in Ukraine, and reports that other countries were considering acquiring nuclear weapons. Regarding Iran, he said that the necessary technical groundwork for a diplomatic agreement had been completed.
