Fresh heavy rain is aggravating the flood situation in several parts of Odisha, with rivers in north Odisha rising again under the influence of a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal. The Baitarani is once again swelling in Jajpur, raising fears of another flood in low-lying areas of Dasarathpur, even as many families are yet to recover from earlier inundation. IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in Odisha today and tomorrow, with red alerts in Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
In Odisha, the flood threat has resurfaced with the Baitarani River rising again in Jajpur district. At Akhuapada, the river stood at 17-point-82 metres at noon today, against the danger mark of 18-point-33 metres, and continues to rise. This has raised fears of another round of flooding in low-lying areas of Dasarathpur, which could face its seventh flood this season. The situation is particularly worrying as Dasarathpur has been affected by floods since the sixth of last month, while several embankment breaches remain vulnerable.
The IMD says a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal is bringing heavy to very heavy rain. Red warning has been issued for Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, while Jajpur and Bhadrak are under orange warning.
