European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen today welcomed progress in talks between the United States and Iran aimed at finding a complete solution to the hostilitie in West Asia, while insisting Tehran must not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.
In a social media post, Ms Ursula said Europe supports diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict and ensuring regional stability, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz and guaranteeing freedom of navigation. She also urged Iran to end what she called its destabilising actions through proxy groups.
The remarks come after US President Donald Trump stated that an agreement had been “largely negotiated” between Tehran and Washington on the subject of finalisation of the deal between the two sides.
