EAM Dr Jaishankar calls upon UN to show leadership rather than remaining a spectator to global crises

External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has called upon the United Nations to demonstrate leadership rather than remaining a spectator to global crises. Dr Jaishankar made the remarks while speaking at the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Global Sammelan in New Delhi today. The event marked the 75th anniversary of Chinmaya Mission. The Minister pitched for the world body to recognise its shortcomings and limitations, and seek improvement. He made the remarks in the presence of UN Resident Coordinator in India, Stefan Priesner, who also shared the dais with him. The External Affairs Minister said, the need for reformed multilateralism is growing stronger by the day. He stressed that large parts of the world cannot be excluded from global decision-making and called on the United Nations to demonstrate leadership rather than remaining a spectator to global crises.

Dr Jaishankar said, India expresses global sentiment when it urges that dialogue and diplomacy are the only solution for global conflicts, stressing that New Delhi is ready to work with international partners towards peace. Referring to the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, he said their consequences are being felt by people, societies and economies far beyond the conflict zones.

Highlighting economic challenges, the Minister said the Global South is facing a crisis of finance, fuel, food and fertilizers. He urged greater international cooperation to reduce economic risks and ensure diversified supply chains.

Dr. Jaishankar described terrorism as a deadly threat to peace and said its use as an instrument of statecraft is unacceptable and cannot be justified. He called for stronger global resolve and zero tolerance to counter terrorism in all its forms.

On technological progress, Dr. Jaishankar said artificial intelligence could bring far-reaching changes but should not remain in the hands of a few. He reiterated India’s support for a responsible, inclusive and human-centric approach to AI, ensuring its benefits are accessible to all.
