The Bombay High Court on Thursday cancelled the bail granted to dismissed police officer Sachin Waze in the 2021 Antilia bomb scare and Mansukh Hiran murder case, allowing an appeal filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). A bench of Justices Girish Kulkarni and Neela Gokhale set aside the special court’s September order granting relief to the former assistant police inspector, observing that the impugned order stood quashed.
The NIA had challenged the bail order, arguing that Waze was involved in a conspiracy to plant an explosives-laden SUV near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s residence in south Mumbai and was also accused of murdering businessman Mansukh Hiran, whose body was found in a Thane creek in March 2021. The High Court had earlier stayed the special court’s bail order following the agency’s appeal, keeping Waze lodged at Thane Central Prison. The special court had granted him bail on the grounds that the NIA failed to establish a prima facie case under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
