Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the likely impact of El Nino on the state and the measures needed to reduce its effect on agriculture at the state secretariat in Amaravati today. He also reviewed awareness programmes for farmers and the preparedness of various departments.
Officials informed that the state recorded a 69 per cent rainfall deficit in July and the rainfall deficit could remain between 35 and 40 per cent over the next three months. They said 122 high-risk mandals have been identified, and crops, including cotton and paddy, may be affected.
The Chief Minister directed officials to explore the use of borewells in high-risk areas and examine the possibility of diverting Vamsadhara waters to protect crops. He said the government will launch farmer awareness programmes from August 3, promote alternative crops and implement an emergency seed plan.
