World Ozone Day is being observed across the globe today. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the crucial role of the ozone layer in safeguarding life on Earth.
The theme for 2026 is “Global Action for a Cooler Planet.” The theme highlights the achievements of international cooperation in protecting the ozone layer. It also connects ozone protection with climate-change action.
The theme emphasises collective responsibility and sustained global action. It promotes the use of environmentally friendly technologies and safer alternatives. 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.
The Kigali Amendment was adopted in 2016. Often described as “Earth’s umbrella, the ozone layer acts as a protective shield, blocking harmful UV radiation from the sun. This natural barrier significantly reduces the risk of skin cancer, cataracts, and damage to ecosystems.
Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh today said that India has demonstrated that sustainable economic growth is possible while protecting the environment.
Addressing a programme organised in Mumbai to mark the 32nd World Ozone Day, Mr Singh said India has exceeded its targets under the Montreal Protocol without compromising on development.
The Minister emphasised that collaboration among the government, scientific community, industry and citizens can help address environmental challenges.
Calling upon the students present at the programme, Mr Singh said that, for citizens, Mission LiFE stands for the mindful utilisation of natural resources.
The 28th edition of “The Montreal Protocol: India’s Success Story” and publications based on studies conducted by the Ozone Cell of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change were released at the programme. Mr Singh also launched the Net Zero Portal and the NAPCC Dashboard.
