World Ozone Day is being observed across the globe today. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the crucial role of the ozone layer in safeguarding life on Earth.
The theme for 2026 is “Global Action for a Cooler Planet.” The theme highlights the achievements of international cooperation in protecting the ozone layer. It also connects ozone protection with climate-change action.
The theme emphasises collective responsibility and sustained global action. It promotes the use of environmentally friendly technologies and safer alternatives. 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.
The Kigali Amendment was adopted in 2016. Often described as “Earth’s umbrella, the ozone layer acts as a protective shield, blocking harmful UV radiation from the sun. This natural barrier significantly reduces the risk of skin cancer, cataracts, and damage to ecosystems.
Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vradhan Singh said that the ozone layer is the shield against harmful UV rays.
In a social media post, the Minister highlighted that the day reminds that protecting the ozone layer starts at home. He said that simple measures, like maintaining ACs at 24 degree Celsius and choosing efficient appliances, reduce emissions for a healthier Earth.
Mr Singh said preserving the ozone layer safeguards human health, biodiversity and climate stability. He also called on the citizens to embrace sustainable practices for a safer future.
