Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has said that India’s maritime sector is a strong anchor for national progress. In a social media post on World Maritime Day today, Mr Sonowal said, the government is focused on infra modernisation, policy reforms and a resolute Seafarer First vision, which is driving this growth forward. 

 

Every year on the final Thursday in September, people around the world commemorate World Maritime Day to recognise the hard work of those who work in the maritime industry. World Maritime Day is being observed today to highlight the importance of the maritime sector and recognise the contribution of seafarers and maritime professionals to global trade and development. The day also draws attention to the vital role of shipping in connecting countries, transporting essential goods and supporting economies across the world. 

 

The theme for this year is ‘From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence’. The theme has been selected by the International Maritime Organization, IMO, for 2026 and 2027. It highlights the Organization’s commitment to help Member States put maritime policies and regulations into practice through technical assistance, training and other essential services.

 

The International Maritime Organization, IMO, was established through a Convention adopted on 6th March, 1948. The Convention entered into force on 17th March, 1958, and the Organization held its first meeting in January 1959. IMO develops and maintains a comprehensive international regulatory framework covering maritime safety, security, environmental protection and other aspects of international shipping.

 

International shipping transports more than 80 per cent of global trade to people and communities around the world. World Maritime Day provides an opportunity to recognise the vital role of shipping and to emphasise the importance of implementing international maritime standards effectively.
