WHO Director-General reviews Uganda’s readiness amid Ebola outbreak in DRC

World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is currently in Uganda to personally assess the country’s readiness to respond to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and to support enhanced cross-border coordination.

The WHO chief engaged with the UN Country Team in Uganda to strengthen coordination and reinforce collective preparedness and response efforts. President of Uganda Yoweri Museveni also met the WHO chief and discussed the importance of community awareness, early detection, and cross-border collaboration.

Earlier, the WHO chief lauded Uganda’s efforts, including the country’s surveillance, testing and case management systems in response to the Ebola outbreak. He also mentioned Uganda’s screening at the borders, which helped detect cases arriving from neighbouring DRC. In a social media post, he informed that out of the 19 confirmed cases so far, 14 were among people who entered from DRC and five are Ugandan nationals.
