West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced a zero-tolerance policy against drugs, saying his government has made the anti-drug campaign a top priority.
Speaking at the launch of the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029’ programme in New Town today, he said central and state agencies are conducting joint anti-drug operations across the state.
Around 3.1 lakh bottles of banned cough syrup, valued at nearly 31 crore rupees, were destroyed in Bidhannagar today. Earlier, two lakh bottles worth around 20 crore rupees were destroyed in Balurghat.
The Chief Minister said recent criminal cases have revealed links with drugs. The government will focus on destroying illegal opium and cannabis cultivation in border areas and disrupting drug trafficking at its source.
He said the STF can now independently investigate cases and file charge sheets after its investigative powers were upheld following the state government’s intervention in the Supreme Court.
