West Bengal celebrates 188th birth anniversary of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay

The 188th birth anniversary of Sahitya Samrat Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay is being celebrated across West Bengal today.

Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was born on 26th June 1838 at Kathalpara in Naihati, in the present-day North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. He composed the national song Vande Mataram, which inspired countless freedom fighters during India’s independence movement.

Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay authored several literary classics, including Ananda Math, Durgesh Nandini, Devi Chaudhurani, and Kapal Kundala. He made a significant contribution to Bengali literature and inspired many freedom fighters and national leaders.

On the occasion, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari paid tributes to Rishi Bankim Chandra at the Bankim Smriti Granthagar in Kolkata. Special programmes have also been organised at his ancestral home, Bankim Sangrahashala, at Kathalpara in Naihati.
