India continued its impressive medal-winning run at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan today, with athletes making their mark across shooting, cricket, kurash and boxing. The country added FOUR more medals to its tally so far today, while the Indian men’s cricket team also advanced to the semi-finals.

 

Athlete Gulveer Singh has won his second silver medal at the ongoing Games, finishing runner-up in the men’s 1,500-metre event. Gulveer clocked a personal best of 3 minutes 37-point-92 seconds to claim the silver medal. The athlete had earlier won silver in the men’s 10,000 metres event.

 

In shooting, Esha Singh has won the silver medal in the women’s 25-metre pistol individual event. The 21-year-old Indian shooter finished second with a score of 38 points.

 

Athlete Vithya Ramraj has won the bronze medal in the women’s 400-metre hurdles, setting a new national record in the process. Ramraj clocked a personal best of 54-point-75 seconds to finish third and broke a more than four-decade-old national record created by the legendary P T Usha.

 

India also secured a bronze medal in Kurash, with Pincky Balhara finishing third in the women’s under-78-kilogram category. Balhara defeated South Korea’s Lim Garam 3-nil in the quarterfinals to secure her place on the podium.

 

In boxing, India has assured itself of three more medals, with Lovlina Borgohain, Priya Ghanghas and Kapil Pokhariya advancing to the semi-finals in their respective weight categories. Olympic medallist Lovlina defeated South Korea’s Seong Suyeon by a unanimous 5-nil verdict in the quarterfinals of the 75-kilogram category. Priya also booked her place in the semi-finals of the women’s 60-kilogram category. She defeated Tajikistan’s Mijgona Samadova 5-nil in the quarterfinals.

 

Kapil Pokhariya moved to the last four with 5-0 win over South Korea’s Kim Gichae in Men’s 90kg category.

 

Meanwhile, the Indian men’s cricket team has advanced to the semi-finals without taking the field. Its quarterfinal against Afghanistan was abandoned due to inclement weather in Aichi-Nagoya. As the defending champions, India progressed on the basis of its higher position in the ICC T20 International rankings. India are ranked number one, while Afghanistan are currently tenth. India will face the winner of the quarterfinal between Nepal and Sri Lanka in the semi-final.

 

India’s 4×100-metre relay team qualified for the final today. The Indian quartet of Gurindervir Singh, Abinaya Rajarajan, Animesh Kujur and Haritha Bhadra clocked 41-point-54 seconds to finish second in their heat and third overall. With the performance, the Indian team secured its place in the final, which will be held tomorrow.

 

In Squash, the Indian women’s and men’s teams marched into the quarterfinals. Indian women, seeded third, got past Japan while Men’s team defeated South Korea to seal a place in the last eight stage.

 

India are currently 12th in the Asian Games medal standings, with a total of 41 medals – four gold, 18 silver and 19 bronze.
