Malayalis across the world are celebrating Vishu today, ushering in new hopes and prosperity. Vishu, a symbol of Keralam’s rich agrarian culture and abundance, is traditionally observed on the first day of the Malayalam month of Medam.
This year, however, the festival falls on Medam 2. The day began with the auspicious Vishukkani, with people viewing the ceremonial arrangement and exchanging Vishukkaineettam as part of the celebrations. Thousands of devotees thronged the Guruvayur Temple for Vishukkani darshan in the early hours.
At Sabarimala Temple, Vishukkani darshan began after 4 AM following the ritual offerings to the deity. Heavy rush is being reported at major temples across the state as devotees gather to celebrate Vishu with traditional fervour.
