The Ministry of Culture officially commemorated Hyderabad Liberation Day at the Parade Grounds in Secunderabad today, marking the 79th anniversary of the erstwhile princely state’s integration into the Indian Union following Operation Polo on September 17, 1948. The event commenced with Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, accompanied by Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, paying homage to fallen soldiers at the War Memorial.
Addressing the gathering, Vice President highlighted that September 17, 1948, marked the conclusion of a decisive chapter in independent India’s history. He described the integration as a reflection of statesmanship, courage, and sacrifice, noting that the story of Hyderabad illustrates the enormous challenges faced by a young nation consolidating diverse territories into a constitutional democracy.
He paid rich tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for laying the foundation of a unified nation, while also acknowledging the sacrifices of freedom fighters such as Ramji Gond, Turrebaz Khan, and Komaram Bheem. He emphasised that national unity extends beyond geography and relies on equal rights, dignity, and opportunity for every citizen. Additionally, he praised the Central Armed Police Forces for their historic role during the state’s integration and their ongoing efforts against Left-Wing Extremism.
Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla noted that the liberation of Hyderabad stands as a crucial milestone coming thirteen months after national independence, attributing the final integration to Sardar Patel’s determination and the courage of freedom fighters.
Union Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy pointed out that this event marks the fifth consecutive year the Ministry of Culture has hosted the official commemoration to honour the true aspirations of the region. He criticised attempts to erase the history of the movement, reiterating the government’s resolve to preserve the accurate history of the liberation struggle. Meanwhile, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat framed Operation Polo as a decisive victory of righteousness over oppression, reflecting the triumph of collective national resolve.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar spoke on the sacrifices made by the public against the oppressive Nizam regime and the Razakars, emphasising that the central government remains dedicated to keeping this historical legacy alive.
At the event, Mr. Radhakrishnan also visited a two-day photo exhibition organised by the Central Bureau of Communication under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The exhibition documented the struggle, sacrifices, and historic journey toward Hyderabad’s integration, with the Vice President commending its extensive research and design.
