Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 5,069

The death toll from last month’s devastating earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to 5,069. National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said 16,740 people have been injured, while 6,462 have been rescued. He said 21,235 people are staying in 107 temporary relief camps in the capital Caracas and the central states of La Guaira, Miranda and Aragua.

More than three weeks after the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes struck, authorities have recorded 1,331 aftershocks.

Meanwhile, Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodriguez thanked 28 countries for extending humanitarian assistance to earthquake victims. After inspecting an aid collection centre in Caracas, she said more than 2,000 tonnes of international relief material are being sorted and distributed to people staying in temporary camps following the earthquakes.
