US stocks ended higher yesterday with sharp gains for industry heavyweights, as investors looked toward what the Federal Reserve would say about the interest rate outlook after its policy meeting this week. 

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.38 percent, the S&P 500 gained 0.32 percent and the Nasdaq Composite jumped 0.35 percent.
