Union Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, today visited the flood-ravaged Dhemaji district in Assam to review the situation and assess the hardships faced by the affected population.

 

The Union Minister, who is on a visit to the North Eastern region to take stock of the recent flood situation in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, inspected the worst-affected Arun Chapori area in Dhemaji district today.

 

Addressing the media after the inspection, Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the area had witnessed widespread devastation, with the river changing its course and destroying houses, household property, standing crops, and electricity infrastructure. He said the scale of the crisis is immense and severe.

 

The Minister stated that the administration is currently focused on immediate relief measures, including restoring connectivity, ensuring the supply of safe drinking water, and deploying medicines to prevent disease outbreaks. He added that long-term measures, such as clearing heavy silt and debris to facilitate the resumption of farming activities and rebuilding damaged houses, will be initiated immediately after a comprehensive damage assessment.

 

He assured that the Central Government would extend full support to the State Government and the affected people. The Minister further emphasized that the Government is committed to formulating a comprehensive long-term strategy to address the recurring flood problem in the region.

 

The high-level Central delegation was accompanied by Assam’s Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development, Atul Bora, State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, Member of Parliament Pradan Baruah, and Jonai MLA Bhuban Pegu.
