Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, today highlighted the importance of small hydro power projects for providing a resilient power alternative to remote areas as well as ecologically vulnerable places.

He was addressing a curtain raising event in New Delhi which was a prelude to Bharat Renewable Summit & Expo scheduled to be held from 2nd to 5th November. Mr. Naik said under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s Clean Energy Journey has undergone remarkable transformation. He highlighted that India has successfully harnessed only 5.2 Gigawatts out of a set target of 21 Gigawatts from across 7100 identified sites. Mr. Naik emphasized that there is a huge opportunity still to be tapped. He also said that India’s vast terrain especially Himalayan states, including north-eastern states, there is a need for a comprehensive reassessment of such a region, by mapping of small hydro resources, using latest scientific methodologies, and tools.
