Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat stated today that the Emergency imposed by the Congress government on June 25, 1975, was a dark chapter in the history of Indian democracy – a time when innocent citizens were subjected to various types of torture.
The Union Minister was addressing a ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ event organised at Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak to mark opposition to the Emergency. Criticising the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he termed the Emergency an insult to India’s democracy and a “murder of the Constitution” by the Congress party. Mr. Shekhawat also expressed gratitude to the Central Government for including the topic of the Emergency in the Class 9 NCERT textbook.
Union Minister Gajendra Singh requested that an ‘Experience Centre’ related to the Emergency be established in Rohtak. During the event, Rajendra Singh and Advocate Jaipal from Sonipat, who had been imprisoned during the Emergency, shared their experiences.
‘Democracy warriors’ (Loktantra Senanis) who were jailed during the Emergency were honoured at the ceremony. State ministers and BJP leaders, including Haryana BJP State President Dr. Archana Gupta and Haryana Assembly Deputy Speaker Krishan Lal Middha, were present on the occasion.
