Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, today visited the Sports Authority of India-North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) centre in Shillong and reviewed sports infrastructure and training facilities. During the visit, the Minister toured various Field of Play (FoP) facilities and reviewed ongoing training activities for athletes across disciplines. She also interacted with coaches and young sportspersons, encouraging them to continue pursuing excellence with discipline, determination, and commitment. She noted that the SAI centre has played an important role in nurturing the sports talent from the northeast. She assured that the central government will further strengthen sports infrastructure in the region.
Highlighting the unique advantage of the SAI-NEHU Shillong centre, she said that the institution has significant potential to emerge as an important high-altitude training destination for elite athletes. She further announced plans to develop a high-altitude training centre at the campus under the Khelo India Mission.
The visit forms part of the Ministry’s continued efforts to strengthen sports infrastructure, athlete support systems, and grassroots sports development across the North East region.
