Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today inaugurated the Integrated Multipurpose Sports Complex at J N Sports Complex in Polo, Shillong.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of the host State Agreement was also signed for the 39th National Games 2027. While Meghalaya leads as the host state, the sister states from the northeast will have the host participation rights in disciplines held within their territories. The Union Minister highlighted that Meghalaya’s economy and infrastructure are growing, and the state’s contribution to the country’s GDP is increasing. He said that four per cent of the population resides in the northeast, but the country’s 25 per cent Khelo India centres are in this region. Mr Mandaviya announced that a high-altitude centre will be set up in Meghalaya.
Calling the newly inaugurated sports facility a hub for building Meghalaya’s future, he said that the athletes trained here will make the state and the whole of India proud. He lauded Chief Minister Sangma for prioritising sports in the state. He also appreciated the system of talent identification through sports science and called it the best practice of Meghalaya.
Chief Minister Sangma extended gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports Mansukh Mandaviya for their support in making the dream of hosting the National Games a possibility.
Along with the Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, the Meghalaya Chief Minister, Union Minister of State for Sports, Raksha Khadse, President of the Indian Olympic Association, P.T. Usha, and the Meghalaya Minister of Sports & Youth Affairs, Wailadmiki Shylla, were present, among others.
