Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh to inaugurate Regional Meteorological Centre in Jammu today

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh will today formally declare the establishment of a new Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Jammu, marking a major step towards strengthening weather forecasting and disaster preparedness in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. The new centre will serve as a key hub for advanced meteorological services across the north-western Himalayan region. It will integrate weather observations with state-of-the-art X-band Doppler Weather Radar systems and an expanded network of Automatic Weather Stations, significantly improving real-time weather monitoring, forecasting accuracy and early warning capabilities.

The Regional Meteorological Centre is expected to strengthen the observation and forecasting framework for extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall, snowfall, flash floods, cloudbursts, thunderstorms, avalanches, heatwaves and cold waves. The centre will support disaster risk reduction efforts and provide crucial weather and climate services to sectors such as agriculture, aviation, hydropower, tourism, water resources and transportation.

The facility will cater to the meteorological requirements of the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, as well as Himachal Pradesh, enhancing weather forecasting, climate monitoring and early warning dissemination across the strategically important Himalayan region.
