The British government has announced plans to introduce safe and legal pathways for eligible refugees while tightening immigration rules to make it easier to deport people residing in the country illegally. Under the new scheme, community groups, universities, and employers will be able to sponsor refugees seeking to settle in the UK. The measures are modelled on Canada’s long-running community sponsorship programme.
The country’s Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, said the proposed immigration legislation would curb the misuse of human rights laws and reduce frivolous legal claims that delay deportations. It will also narrow the definition of family, restricting it to immediate family members only.
Immigration remains a politically sensitive issue in Britain and across many Western nations, which continue to grapple with rising numbers of migrants seeking better economic opportunities and safer lives.
