UK Reaffirms Support for Zelenskyy, Vows to Tighten Sanctions Against Moscow

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy amid growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv over a US-Russia agreement on diesel supplies. During a telephone conversation, Mr. Burnham expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian leader and said Britain would continue to tighten sanctions against Moscow. The two leaders also agreed to meet in person in the coming days for further discussions.

The conversation followed remarks by US President Donald Trump, who called for a new president in Ukraine, accusing Mr. Zelenskyy of failing to secure a peace agreement with Russia and blaming him for rising diesel prices in the United States. Tensions have increased after Washington announced measures to ease restrictions on Russian diesel supplies. Mr. Zelenskyy criticised the move, warning that allowing Russia to sell petroleum products would help finance its war against Ukraine. Under the agreement announced by Mr. Trump, Russia is expected to supply hundreds of thousands of tonnes of diesel to the United States and international markets, with the aim of easing fuel prices.
