UK Defence Secretary John Healey has resigned, accusing the government of being unwilling to commit the resources needed to safeguard the country. In his resignation letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Mr. Healey said the Treasury department had refused to provide the funding required under the government’s Defence Investment Plan, leaving him with no choice but to step down from the Cabinet. Earlier, Britain’s defence and finance ministries have been engaged in months of negotiations over how to meet growing demands for higher military spending, delaying the publication of the Defence Investment Plan since last year. The continued delay came at a time of heightened West Asia conflict and as the United States increasingly shifts its focus away from Europe’s security.
