Typhoon Champi swept past Taiwan today, claiming one life and injuring more than 500, while bringing down trees, disrupting flights and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of households.
The storm, which had earlier intensified into a super typhoon and ranked among the strongest systems in the Pacific this year, has weakened but continues to pack powerful winds as it moves north towards China’s eastern coast.
Taiwan’s fire department confirmed one death after a man was swept away by waves near Liuqiu Island. A total of 527 people were injured amid strong winds and torrential rain. Power utility Taipower said, more than 288,000 households had lost electricity during the storm, although most supplies had since been restored.
China’s emergency management ministry dispatched a team to Zhejiang province as Champi approached the country’s eastern coastline, warning of strong winds and heavy rainfall tomorrow.
Forecasts indicated that Champi would continue moving north along China’s coast before eventually heading towards southern Japan.
