Typhoon Ampil Gathers Strength, Expected to Approach Kanto & Tohoku Regions

In Japan, typhoon Ampil is continuing to gather strength and is likely to approach the Kanto and Tohoku regions in eastern and northeastern Japan from Friday through Saturday.

The Weather officials say that as of the afternoon today, Ampil was 310 kilometres south-southeast of Hachijojima Island. It was moving north at a speed of 15 kilometres per hour.

The officials have warned of heavy rain, high waves, and landslides, especially in the Kanto region, Izu Islands, and Yamanashi Prefecture.

Residents are urged to stay vigilant and prepare for potential flooding, landslides, and strong winds. The typhoon has disrupted air and train traffic in several regions including Tokyo.

By Friday, Ampil’s winds are expected to strengthen to 220 km per hour, similar in strength to a Category 4 hurricane.
