TRAI has released the Standards of Quality of Service (Duration of Advertisements in Television Channels) (Repealing) Regulations, 2026 today. These repeal the Standards of Quality of Service (Duration of Advertisements in Television Channels) Regulations, 2012 dated 14th May 2012, which prescribed a ceiling of twelve minutes of advertisements in a clock hour in broadcast of a programme. These Regulations were primarily intended to monitor and enforce the advertisement duration ceiling. These have now been repealed in order to maintain consonance with the decision of the Central Government on 21st August this year to remove the twelve-minute advertisement duration cap prescribed for television channels.
Information and Broadcasting Ministry had removed the twelve-minute advertisement duration cap prescribed for television channels in a notification published in the Official Gazette. The removal of the cap was undertaken in view of the significant changes in the television broadcasting sector, increased competition and consumer choice. It was done with a view to enable fair competition and ensuring ease of doing business in the television broadcasting sector.
