Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat today said that the tourism sector is no longer limited to travel, recreation and leisure but has emerged as a major pillar of the economy and an important source of employment.

 

Addressing the National Tourism Conclave organised by ASSOCHAM in New Delhi, Mr Shekhawat highlighted that the sector continues to grow despite global and geopolitical uncertainties. The Minister informed that domestic tourism in India registered a growth rate of 12.5 per cent last year, with more than 428 crore tourist visits recorded across the country. He also said that over two crore, or 53 lakh, foreign tourists visited India last year. 

 

 

He stressed that effective destination management and the quality of tourist experiences are crucial for strengthening India’s image as a global tourism destination. Mr Shekhawat underlined the importance of training and capacity building for all tourism stakeholders, particularly frontline personnel, including guides, taxi drivers and hospitality workers. He said the principle of Atithi Devo Bhava must be reflected in actual behaviour and service delivery rather than remaining limited to a slogan.

 

Emphasising the need for private-sector participation, the Union Minister said that the government is working to develop 50 new tourist destinations, but additional investment is required to promote lesser-known locations, ease congestion at existing destinations and create new experiences for visitors. He said that sustained collaboration between the centre and states governments and private-sector stakeholders would be essential to unlock India’s tourism potential.
