In Tamil Nadu, the revised Agriculture Budget for 2026-27 was presented today in the State Assembly. The revised Agriculture Budget for the year 2026-27 was presented by State Agriculture Minister R.Vinoth. He began with the quote ” even if the rains fail, the Government, which is committed to the welfare of the farmers, will not and announced the Kuruvai package with an outlay of Rs. 134.83 crore for both delta and non-delta districts. He also said that the Government’s long-term vision was to bring 100 percent of the cultivated area under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, which will be implemented in 14 clusters in 37 districts covering all crops. This will benefit 15 lakh farmers in the State.
The Government has also prepared a District Agricultural Contingency Plan after the prediction of Super El Niño this year. The State has a target to produce 131 lakh metric tonnes of food grains in five years. The Farmers Development Agency will be established for Rs. 23 Crore. The Government said that an amount of Rs. 7432 Crore will be disbursed to the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation towards providing free electricity connections to farmers.
The State also aims to form new Natural Farming Clusters in an area of 3125 acres under the National Mission of Natural Farming under the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana. The Tamilnadu Soil Fertility Mission will be implemented with ten components at a total outlay of Rs.122 Crore. The Centre and State-funded Mission for Self-sufficiency in Pulses and Edible Oilseeds will be implemented with a total outlay of Rs. 203 Crore. As 98 percent of the 120 lakh bales required by the Cotton spinning mills in the State are procured from other States, the Government has launched the Cotton Renaissance Mission for five years.
The Mission will be implemented in an area of 73 thousand 360 acres at a total outlay of Rs. 27 Crore, benefiting 40 thousand farmers. The State Seed Development Agency will establish seed farms and farmers’ fields for growing Paddy, millets, pulses, oilseeds and cotton. A total of 43 thousand 400 metric tonnes of certified seeds will be produced at Rs. 250 Crore.
The DMK members came in black dress signifying the plight of the farmers and the Cauvery issue. The members created a ruckus as the agriculture minister was praising Chief Minister C.Joseph Vijay. Later, the Speaker JCD Prabakar said that he would look into the speech copy and decide to expunge any objectionable words.
