Tamil Nadu forms expert panel to assess potential impact of strong El Niño

In Tamil Nadu, the state government has formed an Expert Advisory Committee to monitor and assess the potential impact of a strong El Niño weather phenomenon this year and to suggest steps to meet the challenge and mitigation measures. The Government has issued an order to this effect by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department to assess the potential impact based on a scientific assessment and take precautionary steps to avert the danger.

The Expert Advisory Committee will function during 2026-27 and 2027-28. The committee will be led by the Head, Centre for Climate Change and Disaster Management, Anna University, and includes Pradeep John, a prominent weather researcher and Manager of the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited. The seven-member team also has experts from IIT and other institutes dealing with the environment.
